Malak El-Kashif

Malak al-Kashif is a transgender activist who has been arrested on the 6 March 2019 by Egyptian security forces after having posted online criticism to the regime.

On 7 March, Malak al-Kashif appeared in front of the Supreme State Security Prosecutor, who ordered her detention for 15 days pending investigations for “aiding a terrorist organization” and “misusing social media to commit a crime punishable by law”. The police then took her to an undisclosed location, where they detained her incommunicado until 10 March, when her lawyer was able to confirm that the police is detaining her in solitary confinement at a police station. Her detention has since been renewed on 19 March. ​

Despite her female identity, Malak El-Kashif has been placed in a prison for men, where she has suffered from various forms of abuse, violence, inhuman treatment and discrimination based on her gender identity.

We demand from the Egyptian authorities the immediate release of Malak El-Kashif and to drop all charges against her!

Status:

On 15 July 2019, State Security Prosecution ordered the release of trans woman human rights defender Malak Al Kashif after more than 120 days in pre-trial detention since her arrest on 7 March 2019. The charges against her remain pending.

On 3 July 2019, State Security prosecution renewed the pre-trial detention of trans woman human rights defender Malak Al-Kashif for 15 days pending investigation in case 1739.

On 16 June 2019, the State Security Prosecution ordered the renewal of the pre-trial detention of trans woman human rights defender Malak Al-Kashif for an additional 15 days.

On 30 May 2019, the State Security Prosecution ordered the renewal of the pre-trial detention of trans woman human rights defender Malak Al-Kashif for an additional 15 days.

On 4 May 2019, the State Security Prosecution ordered the renewal of pre-trial detention of trans woman human rights defender Malak Al-Kashif for an additional 15 days, as part of the National Security case 1973/2018.

On 16 April 2019, the State Security Prosecution ordered the renewal of pre-trial detention of trans woman human rights defender Malak Al-Kashif for an additional 15 days. She has already spent 41 days in pre-trial detention, including 28 days in solitary confinement in Tora Men's Prison.

On 2 April 2019, the State Security Prosecution renewed the pre-trial detention of trans woman human rights defender Malak Al Kashif for an additional 15 days. Malak remains detained in solitary confinement in Tora Men's Prison.

On 10 March 2019 human rights defender Malak Al-Kashif was found to be detained at Al Haram Police Station. She had been held in solitary confinement there for the three days since her appearance before National Security Prosecution on 7 March 2019. Her lawyer and family did not know where she was being detained during those three days.
